Five things to do on Valentine’s Day 2020 in Canberra

Here are some options – for both couples and singles – that are right here in the capital.

1. For the animal lovers

Can you feel the love tonight? For those looking to walk on the wild side of romance head to the National Zoo and Aquarium this Friday night. Woo at the Zoo includes a guided tour looking at animals in love, their courtship and breeding behaviour. The tour also includes a white rhino and reptile encounter and a glass of champagne or refreshment. Friday, 5pm.

2. For the (single) art lovers

Let your singledom fuel your creativity at Paint Pinot this Valentine’s Day. Spend the evening painting Picasso-style portraits of the person sitting opposite you. And if it doesn’t work with the first person, there’s a chance to paint several people over the three hours. There’s no guarantee that the paintings will be any good, but it does promise to be a fun night. Plus there’s a chance that you’ll meet someone. Friday, 7pm.

3. For the Valentine’s Day haters

Love is a battlefield. Love is monster. Love is sickeningly sweet, at times, and usually those times fall around Valentine’s Day. Instead of spending the night in a room full of roses or swiping right too many times, head to Monster Kitchen and Bar for a night of V-Day mockery. Drink to the poster child of hilariously horrible digital romance – the cheesy 80s dating video – at a boozy bash filled with oyster and martini carts, cocktails, a giant chocolate fondue fountain, a photo booth and plenty of entertainment. Friday, 7pm.

4. For those who love the game

Players gonna play … video games. Head to the National Film and Sound Archive and check out Game Masters in its final days. This late-night event will include a match-making rounds of gameplay with Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime on the big screen in Arc Cinema and there will be a behind-the-scenes look at the interactive about love and life Florence. There is also the chance to win a Sega Mega Drive Mini. Friday, 5pm.

5 For those looking to pick up

If you spent Valentine’s night alone and starting to feel a little lonely, here’s an event which will see you pick up … even if it’s just picking up rubbish. Trash Gather is hosting a clean-up for singles at John Knight Memorial Park which will see you get out into the fresh air and do something good for the environment at the same time. There will also be a romantic picnic with the cheese, crackers and drinks follow the clean up. Saturday, 3-6pm. Free. People are asked to bring is water, a hat, sunscreen, gloves and a cup for the complimentary drinks.

So, what are your plans for tonight?
