As restrictions and lockdowns return, Australians are turning to online shopping once more. June growth was 4.7 percent higher year on year and 11 percent higher than May 2021.
• VIC grew 15.1 percent year on year and 21.4 percent from May 2021. • WA and NT grew 7.2 percent and 6.3 percent, respectively.

State Overview

Victoria experienced the highest year-on-year growth in online shopping, up 48.9 percent YOY – far exceeding the national average of 31.8 percent. The state also had the most days under lockdown.

In FY21, all other states and territories experienced YOY growth of at least 20%.

State Share

From July to October 2020, Victoria was the top destination for online purchases, ahead of New South Wales. Despite its smaller population, Victoria contributed nearly as much as NSW during FY21, accounting for 30% of all online purchases.

When compared to FY20, Victoria’s increased online share meant that the rest of the states and territories lost share.

Over nine million households shopped online in FY21

Participation surpassed the nine million household mark for the first time in Australian eCommerce history. In fiscal year 21 (FY21), 9.1 million households made online purchases.

Household participation increased 2.7 percent year on year in June for the first time since March.

As lockdowns and restrictions sweep the country, online shopping booms

Post Offices are the most popular alternative delivery location

Over 63 percent of consumers prefer to pick up their parcel from the local Post Office when choosing an alternate delivery point.
Of the 40% of respondents who prefer parcel collection outside of business hours, 28% indicated that the most convenient time to collect a parcel is after 5 p.m. Another 12% of customers preferred to pick up parcels before 9 a.m.

Providing customers with alternate delivery options, such as 24/7 Parcel Lockers, at the checkout gives them the flexibility and convenience to pick up their parcels wherever and whenever it is convenient for them.
