How to Store Your Meat

The Secret to Storing Your Meat

It’s critical to follow strict food hygiene guidelines when storing, preparing, and cooking meat to prevent bacteria from spreading and food poisoning.

The following meat storage tips will assist you in maintaining food safety and ensuring the highest possible quality of your meat and meat products:

1. Before freezing raw meat, wrap it in airtight packaging. Because oxygen in the air speeds up the chemical breakdown of many foods, vacuum-packaging meat is the best way to store it.

2. Meat can be safely kept in the fridge for 3 to 4 days (assuming it is still within its “use-by” date) if the temperature is kept below 4 degrees Celsius.

3. Separate raw meat from other foods. Remember to keep raw meat in a clean and sealed package or container on the bottom shelf of your refrigerator (which is the coldest part of the fridge) so that it doesn’t drip onto other foods or come into contact with anything else.

4. Cooked meat should be refrigerated as soon as possible after cooking if you do not intend to eat it right away. Cooked meals should not be left out at room temperature for more than two hours, and hot meat should not be wrapped in plastic until it has cooled.

5. Meat must always be frozen before its ‘use-by date when it comes to freezing. Beef can be safely frozen for up to 12 months if the freezer temperature is kept below -17 degrees Celsius (equivalent to 00 Fahrenheit).

6. It sounds simple, but it’s surprising how many people fail to follow the label’s storage instructions! They’re there for a reason, and you should never eat meat that has passed its ‘use-by date on the package.

Knowledge of Food Safety

How can you tell if the meat you’re eating is safe to eat?
Trust your instincts first and foremost. Fresh meat should be kept in the refrigerator at 40°F or lower. Keep an eye on the ‘packed on’ or ‘use by’ dates to make sure you’re getting the most out of your meat.

Meat should be bright in colour (not grey), moist and fresh to the touch (not sticky or tacky), and most importantly, trust your nose—spoiled meat often emits a strong odour.

Meat is fresher and more delicious the sooner it is cooked. But, some people tend to forget and we get it!

Now that you know what is the right way to store your meat, make sure you also get the freshest one the first time you buy it. Don’t worry, here in Farmland Fruits & Veggies we carry a range of fresh marinated meat, poultry, and other items to bulk out your meal list.
