A drive-in cinema is coming to town to quench film lovers’ thirst for watching movies in public.
Event organizer Ergo and Co plans to bring the cinematic experience while still adhering to the rules of the large-scale social restrictions (PSBB) in Jakarta.
“We are looking for a business opportunity during this coronavirus pandemic,” said Adam Hadziq of Ergo and Co.
At a drive-in cinema, film-goers view movies shown on a large outdoor movie screen from the privacy and comfort of their cars. This way, they can still comply with the social-distancing protocols without sacrificing the fun of going out to watch movies.
In March, a drive-in cinema in Seoul, South Korea, saw a 10-20 percent increase in sales for weekdays, while weekend tickets were always sold out, as citizens looked for safer spaces to enjoy a movie without the risk of contracting COVID-19. Meanwhile, the team behind the Tribeca Film Festival is organizing a summer film series across the United States at drive-in theatres.
As posted on the Instagram account of @driveincinemajkt, the first screening is scheduled to take place in June. More details will be announced soon.
“We want to encourage our fellow event organizers to create new things,” Adam said.
