How to Take Care of Your Linen Clothes

Share :

Are you planning to upgrade your style and wish to have linen clothes? Worry no more because, in this article, you are going to know how to take care of linen clothes which actually is not that much of a problem. Take a look!

1. Be careful when washing your linen clothes

Linen is a fabric that can be washed either with a washing machine or with your hands. However, there are a few things to know about caring for linen that differ from how you would wash other natural fabrics like cotton.

Linen, like cotton, tends to shrink. As a result, avoid washing linen clothes in hot water and instead use warm or cold water; if your linen is a vibrant or dark colour, use cold water to avoid fading.

Linen is best washed with a mild detergent; a product designed for baby clothes, such as Dreft, ascent- and dye-free detergents, such as Tide Free and Gentle, or a specialty detergent, such as Le Blanc Linen Wash, are all good options. Avoid using fabric softener and, even if the linen is white, never use bleach on it.

If you need to brighten white or light-coloured linen clothing, use an oxygenated bleach, such as Biokleen Oxygen Bleach Plus. If you have a vintage linen garment that has yellowed due to age and/or has older stains, there is a wonderful product called Restoration Fabric Restorer that will safely and effectively restore the garment to its original state.

Because of the way linen fibres are structured, overhandling can cause damage; therefore, use the gentle cycle and wash linen alongside similar lightweight or delicate fabrics — for example, your lightweight cotton, camisoles, and other undergarments — and avoid mixing heavy items in a load with linen clothes. When handwashing, avoid wringing the fabric as this will unfavourably twist the fibres.

2. Air drying the linen clothes

Aside from its good looks, one of linen’s best qualities is that it dries quickly — this makes linen an excellent choice for travel and for wearing in hot weather. Given how quickly it dries and its proclivity to shrink when exposed to heat, air-drying is your best bet for linen clothing.

Furthermore, we wear linen during the warmer months, which means it will air dry quickly due to the summer heat. Use a low- or no-heat setting if you choose to machine dry. When air drying, lay the garment flat on a towel or use a drying rack; hangers, unless padded, will leave unsightly dent marks.

3. Smoothing the wrinkle part of your clothes

The decision of whether or not to iron your linen clothes is just that — a decision. Making that decision or not is really dependent on the garment and how you intend to wear it. You won’t want to iron a slouchy linen top, but you might want a crisper look when it comes to a more tailored linen shirt for the office or a linen dress for a wedding or other formal occasion.

There are a few procedures that are specific to ironing linen, just like there are for washing, so if you choose to do so, here’s what you need to know.

For best results, press the shirt right out of the wash while it’s still damp, or dampen it with a spray bottle filled with water or linen spray if it’s already dry. Use a medium- to high-heat iron setting and press only until the wrinkles are gone.

You don’t need to iron the fabric until it’s completely dry because it dries quickly on its own. To avoid shiny patches or fading, bright and dark coloured linen garments should be ironed on the backside.

If you want your linen clothes to look pressed for the duration of wear, use spray starch for a crisper look and to prevent whisker points like the knees, elbows, and crotch from becoming impossibly creased as the day progresses.

If you want to keep the natural rumpled look of linen but a garment has become heavily creased, use a spray bottle of water to remove them by lightly spritzing the creased section, laying the item flat, smoothing it with your hands, and letting it air dry.
