If your business has been doing SEO for a while, you have probably seen a checklist for on-page optimisation. It would include having a sitemap, a robots.txt, working on-page load time, and much more very common SEO practices.

But as 2016 progresses, Google’s shaking up some buzz again! The common and the simple SEO practices are now something practically every business out there does regularly. So, it’s clear that when everyone is putting in some effort into winning traffic, successful on-page SEO is no longer a matter of doing things off a checklist. But let’s go one step at a time! If you haven’t started with the basics, check out Moz’s article “On-Page Factors”. These steps are the essentials, and you do need them in order to be on friendly terms with search engines. And once you are all set, let’s explore 3 more things on your extracurricular activities list that may help your business outperform its competition!

Keywords? Close Variants and Synonyms!

You have all heard about keywords: you need to do a keyword research, choose some keywords, base your content on them and keep the density! However, Google’s becoming more and more picky with over 6 billion search hits daily!

To be able to offer their users the best results, search engines have vast corpuses of synonyms and close variants for billions of keywords. This allows you to check how much your content is really diving into the topic.

If you offer software development services, your keyword “software development services” may also be expressed with phrases like “software engineering services; applications development services, software services agency” and much more.

From the perspective of the on-page SEO of your business, this means that using variations of the main keyword increases your chances of being noticed! It also conveys the message of your content better, allowing your users and even search engines to connect better!

Finally, keep your locations in mind, if you’re a local business! Add the cities or states you serve. So, if you’re an IT company based in Spartanburg, SC, make sure users can find you on Google by searching “IT company in Spartanburg” (They might get creative with the query, but they’ll usually add the location).

Space Management or Page Segmentation

It’s not only what you write but also where you place your content and keywords on the page that matters!

A web page has different parts — headers, footers, sidebars, and more. And search engines have their own way of defining which parts of the page matter the most!

So, make sure you have the most important information and your main keywords in the body, as close to the beginning as you can! Also, remember that most users will be using their mobile devices, and the sidebars and many other parts may not even be seen!

Make sure the different parts of your web page are connected but don’t ever fill them with the same content: every single one of them has to offer unique content that adds value.

Mobile Friendliness

It’s no longer a secret that there are more mobile than desktop searches. Users have their most personal device ready at hand and they surf the net with it quite often! So, make sure that your website is mobile optimised and has a responsive design with exceptional UX for all mobile devices. Google favours proper responsiveness so spending the effort and finances on making your users’ experience impeccable on mobile will pay you back in the long run!

Hope these points help in making your business one of Google’s favourites! Work on the parts that you are missing and see which techniques work best for your business.
