Fun Facts About Wine

Share :

Always be there when you have a cocktail party. Always be there to boost your night and your confidence. Always be there when you are out of words when having a conversation with your friends. Wine is always there for you. But do you think you know wine well? Here are some fun facts about Wine

1. Not all wines are vegan.

Some go through a filtration process that uses animal byproducts like gelatin. Other wines are clarified with egg whites or fish gelatin. For example, some producers of Italian wines use fish gelatin to speed up the clary fermentation process. Most wine manufacturers in Italy use imported Asian carp scales for this purpose.

2. Wine-flavored Kit Kats are a thing.

Japan never fails to amaze us. You can only get them in Japan (and on Amazon), but still. They come in three flavors: red wine, white wine, and rose. The red wine Kit Kat has raspberry flavoring, and the white wine one has lemon. The rose-flavored Kit Kat is a mix of raspberry and strawberry. They are very obviously for adults only, and you must be 19 or older to buy them. They come in boxes of 10, so you might want to grab a few friends and divvy them up.

3. Italy has a free, 24-hour wine fountain.

It exists. And yes, who is down to join us? (Once this pandemic ends of course!). This fountain is located in the town of Signana, in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. Signana is known for its wine production, and this fountain is a beautiful example of how the people of this town appreciate the importance of wine in their culture. The fountain is called “The Fountain of Fair Drink”, and is located in the main square of Signana. The fountain itself is a beautiful, 19th-century piece of architecture, and the water that flows out of it is said to be especially good for its ability to cure inebriation.

4. “Drinking to one’s health” started in ancient Greece.

The idea was that the host drank the first cup of wine to show his guests he wasn’t poisoning them. Then, to show that he wasn’t trying to make them drunk, he passed around a second cup. By the Middle Ages, the second cup of wine had a different purpose. People believed that wine had magical healing properties, so the second cup was supposed to extend those healing properties to the guests. The same custom of drinking at the end of a meal showed up in Japan, where the last cup of sake was said to “warm the liver” and improve health. And in China, the last few sips of a bowl of rice porridge were believed to have healing properties.

5. Toasting started in ancient Rome.

When Romans would drop a piece of toasted bread into each glass to temper excessive acidity. This led to the widespread practice of toasting bread to make it easier to digest. Throughout Medieval Europe, toasting was common among the upper classes, especially at banquets. The purpose of toasting at these events was to show the wealth and status of the host, as only the wealthiest could afford the expensive spices. The first toaster was invented in 1909 in America and was called the “Electric Sandwich Toaster”, which was a combination of an electric toaster and a sandwich maker. The first pop-up toaster was manufactured in 1938 and was called the “AT-19”. In the 1950s, toasters were mainly chrome and metal and were usually boxy in shape. In the 1960s, toasters came in a variety of colours, shapes, and materials. The first toaster with a lift-up device that allows you to remove the bread without scolding your hands was invented in 1976.
