As restrictions and lockdowns return, Australians are turning to online shopping once more. June growth was 4.7 percent higher year on year and 11 percent higher than May 2021.
• VIC grew 15.1 percent year on year and 21.4 percent from May 2021. • WA and NT grew 7.2 percent and 6.3 percent, respectively.

State Overview

Victoria experienced the highest year-on-year growth in online shopping, up 48.9 percent YOY – far exceeding the national average of 31.8 percent. The state also had the most days under lockdown.

In FY21, all other states and territories experienced YOY growth of at least 20%.

State Share

From July to October 2020, Victoria was the top destination for online purchases, ahead of New South Wales. Despite its smaller population, Victoria contributed nearly as much as NSW during FY21, accounting for 30% of all online purchases.

When compared to FY20, Victoria’s increased online share meant that the rest of the states and territories lost share.

  • 9.1 million Households have shopped online between 1 July 2020 and 30 June 2021, up 5.4% YOY.
  • 14.6% More households shopping online when compared to FY19.
  • 5.3 million Households shopped online in June 2021, 3.8% increase from May.

Over nine million households shopped online in FY21

Participation surpassed the nine million household mark for the first time in Australian eCommerce history. In fiscal year 21 (FY21), 9.1 million households made online purchases.

Household participation increased 2.7 percent year on year in June for the first time since March.

As lockdowns and restrictions sweep the country, online shopping booms

  • Victoria lockdown
Online purchases in Victoria increased 38 percent year on year, while national purchases increased 10.4 percent year on year in the same fortnight. Pet products were popular, with purchases 41 percent higher than the previous year.
  • Sydney lockdown.
The lockdown in Sydney, and then the rest of New South Wales, resulted in an increase in online purchases, with national growth increasing by 10.5 percent year on year. Online shopping in NSW increased by 36% year on year during this three-week period.
  • Baby Boom. Baby products filled shopping carts across the country in the week beginning June 27, 2021, with purchases increasing 31 percent year on year.

Post Offices are the most popular alternative delivery location

Over 63 percent of consumers prefer to pick up their parcel from the local Post Office when choosing an alternate delivery point.
Of the 40% of respondents who prefer parcel collection outside of business hours, 28% indicated that the most convenient time to collect a parcel is after 5 p.m. Another 12% of customers preferred to pick up parcels before 9 a.m.

Providing customers with alternate delivery options, such as 24/7 Parcel Lockers, at the checkout gives them the flexibility and convenience to pick up their parcels wherever and whenever it is convenient for them.
